European Tour Exhibition "Le Luci delle Pietre" by Savina Tarsitano and Dinu Flămând A poetry and photography journey across Europe   "Le Luci delle Pietre" is a project of the Rumanian poet Dinu Flămând and the Italian artist Savina Tarsitano, a poetry and photography journey across European cultures. The Tour Exhibition has been opened on the 25 of March in Berlin at the Romanian Culture Institute. On the 19 of April the exhibition will be opened at the Accademia di Romania, Rome. The opening will be in presence of the Ambassador Karl-Erik Norrman, Secretary General of the European Culture Parliament, the Professor Pasquale Pesce, Director of Development and Planning - Europe and the Professor Giovanni Magliocco of the University of Bari. In May the poet Flămând will be at the Salone Internazionale del Libro of Turin, in cooperation with the Romanian Culture Institute of Venice. The event is an occasion to celebrate the launch of the poetry anthologies by Dinu Flămând Umbre şi Faleze, published by Edition Brumar de Timisoara (2010) and illustrated by Savina Tarsitano's shadows photography and La Luce delle Pietre published by Edition Palomar (2009) in the Italian translation by Giovanni Magliocco with the cover page by Savina Tarsitano. Tarsitano and Flamand met in 2005 while in residency at the Liguria Study center in Bogliasco, near Genoa, where the "Shadows" were born first. The series, later called "Icons of the Chaos", inspired the poems written by Dinu Flamand in a second time. The Shadows are the main interest of the two artists. The story of the shadows, rich in anecdotes and original research, is intertwined with a variety of studies and disciplines that we would not consider at first: art, psychology, astronomy, neurology, are some of the fields in which the shadow has become subject to analysis and study. Shadows as ridges (natural elevations), moving shadows , imperishable, intangible and untouchable. Shadows that suddenly disappear and appear again without allowing any exploration. In the history of painting the relevance assumed by the shadows seems to increase in the artistic periods of maximum naturalism. If we exclude contemporary art, there's no doubt, as Gombrich explains, that shadows are used by major painters to create effects of astonishment and wonder by the alikeness impressed on the pictorial subject. During the Renaissance Humanism the shadow, along with the linear perspective, becomes the factor to shape both pictorial and architectural spaces. In nowadays New York a specific legal instrument, the Zoning Law, has been devised to avoid skyscrapers to overshadow entire streets and blocks. The shadow is only apparently invisible, its concrete presence is in no way less invasive that the one of the object it duplicates, so much so that today we are not surprised anymore to consider it as a unmovable sign, inseparable from the object which creates it. The existence of our shadow is so taken for granted that we sense there is something upsetting and mysterious in what has been created without a shadow. This feeling of anguish, as observed by the psychologist Gustav Jung, is linked to the notion that the shadow is an unconscious double (similitude) of the soul. The works presented by Savina Tarsitano are a tribute to the shadow, and consequently a praise of the light. The shadow is also metaphor of the island, necessary and immovable presence in the ocean of unconsciousness. Favorite harbor, to sight & approach, to contemplate as a projection of one's self, reflected on stone walls, rocks and pavements. The shadow materializes in these works as a "decalcomania" where the soul is projected on the surrounding nature. And it's not by chance that the expressive means used encompass both painting and photography. If it's true that in nature there's no light without shadow, the photographer, by controlling the sources of light can decide to erase every shadow from the object. Savina knows it, that's why her shadows are strongly connected to the light that creates them and to the colors of the islands, changing with the passing of time on the meridian. It's during these travels that Savina, looks for her shadow, nature though, has stitched it to her skin.   The project of the Shadows was continued by Savina Tarsitano in other places, thank to other residency programmes, Fellowships and Institutions: the Upernnavik Museum, the Castle of Coswig, the Nordic Institute for Contemporary Art - in cooperation with the Suonmenlina Governmental Body in Finland - the Caroline Association in Fioul Island, France, the Caribbean Art and Culture Centre Domain de Fonds Saint-Jacques, Martinique and the Centre Culturel de Rencontre in France. Savina Tarsitano was born in Calabria, Italy. She lives between Italy and Germany where she continues her research at the Castle of Coswig in (Anhlat) thanks to the European project Et in Arcadia Ego. Savina research hinges on concept of "approdo" (Italian term meaning landing-place or landfall). She has spent creative periods in "theme-sites" like islands,  abbeys, castles.  Her works, executed using varied techniques, are incarnate visions (ingrown visions) arising from perceived relation with the place, the environment, conceived itself as a visual space.  Her works have been exhibited in Denmark, France, Martinique, Greenland, Italy, Germany, Finland, Belgium, Holland, and the United States (Los Angeles). Dinu Flămând was born in Romania, works and lives in Paris as a writer.
