Dear David, According to the National Priorities Project, the cumulative cost of the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq will surpass the trillion dollar mark - including spending for veterans and foreign aid - on May 30th. In fiscal year 2010, which ends September 30, the cost of the war in Afghanistan will exceed $100 billion, including the supplemental funding bill Congress will likely approve this month. In fiscal year 2011, Afghanistan is projected to cost $117 billion. Organizing the effective political action necessary to end this war requires persistence. That's why I write you today, asking you to contribute to this campaign. The impact of our work to end this war will likely grow over the next few months as the 2010 elections draw near. Peace Voter, our signature election year campaign to elevate peace issues in the debate, is already active in primary elections this month. Making sure our voices are heard above the din of teabaggers and what is euphemistically referred to as the 24 hour news cycle presents a special challenge to this year's Peace Voter 2010 efforts. Meeting the challenge is not complicated however. It is simply a matter of reaching people with information they can use. The most effective way to accomplish this is face-to-face. That's why I need your help. Our activist network consists of hundreds of veteran organizers at work in their local communities and tens of thousands online activists like you. Alone we're drowned out, but acting together, we make sure we're heard. This summer we will recruit and train volunteers to register and educate voters in key states and congressional districts. We will bird-dog candidates and make sure they know our demand for an end to the war. We will pin them down on their positions on the war and between Labor Day and Election Day work to build on the growing number of Congress Members calling for an exit strategy from Afghanistan. Right now, your financial support will have its greatest impact as it allows us to think bigger and plan for a stronger Peace Voter 2010 campaign. As I write you today, a new spasm of violence has erupted in Afghanistan. A car bomb in Kabul and a night raid in eastern Afghanistan have killed at least 18, including Afghan civilians and US and NATO military personnel. To successfully end this war at the soonest possible moment we need to be persistent and highly visible in the months ahead. Please help as best you can. Sincerely, Kevin M. Martin Executive Director Peace Action P.S. We are continuing to pick up co-sponsors in support of Rep. McGovern's H.R. 5015 calling for an exit strategy from Afghanistan. Your support of Peace Action today makes a difference. Thank you. Click here to subscribe to the Action Alert Network Click here to unsubscribe | |
