Art City: Mary Louise Schumacher looks at art and architecture

Hello art and architecture lovers,
Novelist T.C. Boyle memorably described Frank Lloyd Wright as having a "thunder cloud of hair." I just love that. It's a near perfect metaphor for the electrical storm of a brain that Wright was, the man who famously conceived of a cyclone for Manhattan's Fifth Avenue.
What I loved about working on my column this week, though, was exploring the decidedly quieter side of Wright's mind and a little known landmark on Milwaukee's near south side.
Now, a few questions. Are you drawn to the aesthetics of urban bohemianism? Think tattoo-like images of anthropomorphized bunnies. Did you read Little Golden Books as a youngster? Did you ever fantasize about tooling around in an old VW bus? If so, two things are true. One, there is an art exhibit calling your name. Two, you must read Karin Wolf's review of it.
Mere hours before flitting off to the Cincinnati Contemporary Arts Center to screen her film and give a talk, our jet setting Art City contributor Faythe Levine filed this week's "Snaps" It showcased, among other things, a heady talk at MAM, the identity of Faythe's favorite restaurant, handmade pinatas and plush Pabst beer cans.
Another Art City contributor, Stacey Williams-Ng, was just the right person to review a show at the Haggerty this week. She brought a lot of who she is -- as a woman, a Southerner and a painter -- to a show that makes us rethink religious icons, real and imagined. I never knew Stacey hoped for a "lady angel" as a girl.
Oh yes, and there was a bit of artist anarchy at Art City this week. See how one artist agrees to be interviewed by Nathaniel Stern -- but has a bit of fun with us.
For those of you interested in the plans to demolish buildings designated as historic to make way for a proposed Marriott Hotel downtown, here is the latest from my colleague, development reporter Tom Daykin. Also, here's our poll and the details about the public hearing scheduled for Monday.
Finally, let's talk about the weekend. Tonight, Dean Jensen's "Big Bangs" show opens. And there are still more art and craft fairs popping up. Here are two slated for the weekend, one at Green Gallery West and the other at Kunzelmann-Esser. Then, why not round our your weekend with a lantern-lit walk through a sculpture garden at sunset?
Have a great week!

Janet McKenzie's paintings challenge our assumptions about religious icons. A show of her paintings at the Haggerty is reviewed by Art City contributor Stacey Williams-Ng this week. Image courtesy the artist.
